Unlike old-style bifocals, there’s no visible line dividing the lens. Bifocals have a distinct ledge you can see, with an abrupt jump between distance and reading vision. Varifocals blend the different zones smoothly into one lens, which is part of why they look completely ordinary from the outside, but also why there’s a real adjustment period as your eyes learn where to look for each distance.

Not all varifocals are equal. Standard lenses have a narrower zone of clear vision and more distortion at the edges. Premium or personalised varifocals, built around your exact prescription and frame, give you a wider clear zone and far less peripheral blur. That’s the main reason prices swing so much between retailers and lens tiers.

Getting Used to Varifocals

The adjustment period is real, and it’s not just in your head. Expect some peripheral distortion at first, and a genuine need to move your head rather than your eyes to find the right part of the lens. It settles down, but give it a couple of weeks before judging whether they’re right for you.
