How to read your prescription
SPH (Sphere)
The main correction. Negative (−) means short-sighted, positive (+) means long-sighted. "Plano" or "PL" means zero power, no correction needed for that eye.
CYL (Cylinder) & Axis
These appear together and correct astigmatism. CYL is the strength; Axis (1–180°) is the angle. If blank, you don't have astigmatism.
ADD (Addition)
The extra magnification for reading. Appears on bifocal and varifocal prescriptions. Usually between +0.75 and +3.50.
Prism & Base
Corrects eye alignment issues. Less common, leave blank if not on your prescription.
PD (Pupillary Distance)
The distance between the centres of your pupils in millimetres. May not be on your prescription, you can request it from your optician. Usually between 55–75mm.
