• Tinted lenses: your prescription made in a sunglasses tint, usually grey, brown or green. It’s the simplest option, and most retailers offer it on any frame.
• Polarised lenses: these cut the glare that bounces off water, wet roads and snow, which makes them popular for driving in low sun, fishing and golf.

Tinted or Polarised: Which Do You Need?

A standard tint suits most people for everyday sun. However, polarised lenses are worth the extra if glare is your main problem, such as driving into low sun, days by the sea, or sport near water and snow.

One thing to know: polarised lenses can make some screens look dark or patchy, including phones and some car dashboards, so try that before relying on them for driving. In any case, make sure the lenses block 100% of UV, often shown as UV400.

Driving With Tinted Lenses

• Avoid category 4 lenses. Sunglass lenses come in filter categories from 0 to 4, and College of Optometrists guidance says only categories 0 to 3 are suitable for driving. Category 4, the darkest, is not.
• Take them off at dusk. Rule 94 of the Highway Code says not to use tinted glasses at night or in poor visibility if they restrict your vision, so keep a clear pair in the car.

Can You Get Them on the NHS?

Usually not. An NHS optical voucher can go towards tinted lenses only when a tint is clinically necessary, for example for certain eye conditions, and your optician decides that. However, you can’t use a voucher for sunglasses you want for comfort or style. Our NHS vouchers page explains who qualifies.

Prescription Sunglasses UK: The Short Answer

For most people, a tinted pair made from a frame you like is the simplest choice, at around £20 to £30 on top of the frame at the retailers we checked. Can You Use an NHS Voucher Online?

Usually, no. Your voucher comes on a paper form called a GOS3, which you and the supplier both sign, and none of the big online retailers we looked at accept it through their websites. Glasses Direct, one of the best-known online retailers, says on its NHS guide that you can’t currently use an NHS voucher on any online website, although it is working with the NHS to change that.

The NHS says you can take your voucher to any supplier you choose, as long as they accept NHS optical vouchers. That last part is the catch.

High Street Opticians That Accept NHS Vouchers

• Specsavers accepts NHS vouchers in store. With a full voucher, glasses from its £15 to £50 ranges cost nothing, or you can put the voucher towards a dearer pair and pay the difference.
• Vision Express takes vouchers in store only. Its website says “vouchers are only valid in store and cannot be used online”. Voucher holders also get extras, such as £75 off glasses costing £199 or more, and a free reglaze.
• Boots Opticians accepts vouchers in store, and staff fill in the NHS forms with you.
• Specscart, which mostly sells online, accepts NHS vouchers at its own stores in Walkden, Bury and Urmston, near Manchester.

Many independent opticians take vouchers too, so it’s worth asking your local one.

Why You Can’t Use an NHS Voucher Online at Most Retailers

Here’s what the online retailers in our comparison say:

• Glasses Direct: not online at the moment, as above.
• SelectSpecs: not on its website, only at its shop in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent.
• Specscart: its FAQ only mentions using vouchers in its stores.
• Lentiamo, Mojoglasses, Glasses2You, Perfect Glasses and SmartBuyGlasses: we couldn’t find anything on their websites either way, so contact them before ordering if you want to use a voucher.

The voucher is a paper form that the supplier signs and claims back from the NHS. That’s simple across a shop counter, but much harder for a website to handle.

How to Get the Most From Your Voucher

• Ask for your GOS3 form at your eye test. The optician who tested your eyes doesn’t have to be the one who makes your glasses.
• Check what it’s worth. The value depends on your prescription, from £42.40 (Voucher A) up to £233.56 in England. Our NHS vouchers guide lists the values. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own.
• Compare the free ranges. A full voucher can cover a whole pair from some ranges, or you can top up for something dearer.
• Look for voucher holder extras, like the thinner lenses and free reglaze Vision Express offers.
• Use it for contact lenses if you prefer. The voucher can go towards those too.
• Remember the eye test is separate. A free NHS eye test doesn’t automatically mean a free voucher. Our guide to the NHS sight test vs NHS optical voucher explains the difference.

When Buying Online Without a Voucher Is Cheaper

If you don’t qualify for a voucher, or you want something the free ranges don’t cover, online retailers are often cheaper than the high street. When we checked in September 2026, basic prescription glasses started from around £20 at Lentiamo and around £30 at Specscart, with anti-glare included at Specscart.

Your voucher can’t go towards an online order, so compare the two properly: the high street price minus your voucher, against the full online price. Our comparison tool shows both side by side and tags the opticians that accept NHS vouchers.

NHS Voucher Online: The Short Answer

For now, you’ll almost always need to use an NHS voucher in person, at opticians such as Specsavers, Vision Express and Boots. If your voucher covers most of what you need, spend it on the high street. If it doesn’t, or you don’t qualify, compare online prices too. Retailers do change these policies, so we check them regularly and will update this post if anything changes.

Who Are Mojoglasses?

Mojoglasses is a UK optical manufacturer based near Cambridge, with its own lens lab in Cambridgeshire. With over 30 years of experience, their own lab technicians make every pair on site.

They only sell designer brands, including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Prada, Versace, Tom Ford, Persol, Oliver Peoples and Ted Baker. According to their website, they are an authorised retailer for these brands, so the frames are genuine and come with the manufacturer’s warranty. Their team includes qualified dispensing opticians, and you can call, email or chat with them if you need help choosing lenses.

Customers rate them highly. At the time of writing they have a 4.9 score on Trustpilot from over 3,600 reviews.

Mojoglasses Review: How Much Do Their Glasses Cost?

The price you see on a frame is for the frame only. You choose and pay for lenses separately in the next step.

Frames start from around £40. As an example, the Ray-Ban Clubmaster RX5154 was £78 when we checked, against a full price of £162. Adding their basic single vision lenses (£10) brought the total to £88, plus £5.95 delivery.

Lens Options and Extras

Once you have picked a frame, you choose your lenses. For single vision lenses, the options were:

• Clear lenses: £10
• Blue light blocking lenses: £35 (includes anti-reflective coating)
• Driving lenses, to cut glare from headlights: £45
• Light-adaptive lenses that darken in the sun: from £50
• Prescription sunglasses tint: from £20
• Zeiss single vision lenses: from £85

If you have a stronger prescription, you can add thinner, lighter lenses for £25, £45 or £70, depending on how strong your prescription is. This is one of their strengths, as they make lenses for high and complex prescriptions every day.

One thing to note: the basic £10 clear lenses do not mention an anti-reflective coating, while the more expensive options do. If you want anti-glare, check what comes with them before you pay.

Reglazing: Keep Your Frames, Change Your Lenses

If you already have frames you love, Mojoglasses can reglaze them with new lenses. You choose your lenses online, they email you a prepaid label, you post your glasses to them, and they aim to send them back within 7 days of receiving them. It is useful if your prescription has changed, your lenses are scratched, or you want to add something like a sun tint or thinner lenses.

Delivery, Returns and Warranty

• Delivery: £5.95 for tracked next day delivery once your glasses are dispatched.
• How long it takes: they usually dispatch single vision glasses within 7 to 10 days, and varifocals within 10 to 14 days.
• Returns: you have 14 days from delivery to return your glasses.
• Warranty: frames come with a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty against faults.

Mojoglasses Review: The Downsides to Know About

The biggest one is the returns policy. If you return glasses with prescription lenses, Mojoglasses only refund the frame, not the lenses, because they make the lenses to your prescription. You also pay the return postage. Your normal consumer rights still cover faulty glasses.

Other things to bear in mind:

• The headline price is for the frame only, so the total will always be higher.
• They make every pair to order, so expect to wait one to two weeks.
• They only sell designer brands, so if you just want the cheapest possible pair, other retailers will be cheaper.

Mojoglasses Review: Who Are They Best For?

To sum up this Mojoglasses review, they are a good fit if:

• A genuine designer frame matters to you, but full high street prices do not.
• You have a strong prescription and need thinner, lighter lenses.
• Your current frames are fine and you just need new lenses.
